When performed in the vicinity of MTP, the irrigation of cultures alters the natural hydrogeological system - a vital abiotic factor for all the groups of living species within a MTP. If the discharges from irrigation channels are frequent, their effect on the hydroperiod will be similar to the one witnessed in cases of deepening. Moreover, sometimes the available irrigation water contributes towards the dissemination of atypical species in the communities of MTP’s - such as the case of some fish or the red swamp crawfish (Procambarus clarkii), which results in uncommon predation and competition in this kind of temporary habitats, causing the degradation of the fauna community.
