"Temporary Ponds: a natural habitat to be protected!"

LIFE Charcos brings together European experts in 2017

> LIFE Charcos will organize Wetlands Seminar to potenciate the exchange of knowledge and experience among various wetland and temporary pond experts.

The LIFE Charcos Project Seminar will take place next year 2017, associated with two other events (the 7th EPCN Workshop and 12th Annual Meeting of the Society of Wetland Scientists), between 1st and 6th of May, at the University of Algarve, Campus Gambelas, in Faro.

This event is being organized jointly with two other organizations, namely the EPCN (European Pond Conservation Network) and the SWS-EC (Society of Wetland Scientist, European Chapter) in order to potentiate the exchange of knowledge and experience among the various specialists in the area of wetland conservation in general and of temporary ponds in particular.

The EPCN will hold the 7th Workshop in conjunction with the LIFE Charcos Project Seminar, from the 1st to the 4th of May, with the theme: "PONDS IN A CHANGING WORLD", with emphasis on the following sessions:

  • Ecosystem functioning and services;
  • Organisms, from populations to communities;
  • Challenges in pond conservation and management;
  • LIFE projects (and others) dedicated to the conservation of wetlands.

There will be opportunities to visit some Mediterranean Temporary Ponds, targets of the LIFE Charcos Project, in Vila do Bispo and Sagres, at the field trip on the 4th of May.

Meanwhile, the Society of Wetland Scientists, European Chapter, will hold the 12th Annual Meeting to focus on "SUSTAINABLE WETLAND MANAGEMENT - EXPLORING NOVEL APPROACHES FOR WATER MANAGEMENT, BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION, RESTORATION, POLLUITION CONTROL AND CLIMATE CHANGE". This event will take place shortly after the LIFE Charcos Project Seminar on May the 5th and the 6th, at the same location, and will include thematic sessions about:

  • Paludiculture as a sustainable use of wetlands;
  • Ecological quality and conservation of wetlands;
  • River conservation: facing agriculture intensification and climate;
  • Wetlands and water quality.

We invite all LIFE (or other) wetland conservation projects to participate in the LIFE Charcos Project Seminar. This event will potentiate the exchange of experiences between projects that are in the field implementing actions of habitat management for the conservation of these wetlands, also looking for the transfer of knowledge to technicians, scientists and to the general public.

Registration at this LIFE Charcos Project Seminar is free but mandatory and will also give access to participation in the lectures with guest speakers from the 7th EPCN Workshop
