"Temporary Ponds: a natural habitat to be protected!"

Project LIFE Charcos was present in the International Congress Wetlands 2014

> The Project LIFE Charcos – ‘Conservation of Temporary Ponds in the Southwest Coast of Portugal’ – was presented in a side-line session of the Congress Wetlands 2014, which was fully dedicated to the Programme LIFE.

Experts of the Project LIFE Charcos from the teams of LPN and UÉvora were in Huesca at the IX International Congress Wetlands 2014, which took place between the 14th and 18th of September and had more than 300 participants from the 5 continents.

The Project LIFE Charcos was presented in a side-line session of the congress exclusively dedicated to this Community programme. This presence allowed the promotion of the project and also raised awareness about other international projects within this field, thus enabling a space for discussion and exchange of ideas. Besides the Project LIFE Charcos, other 9 European projects participated, which are taking place in Spain, Portugal, Hungary and Slovenia.

Within the general framework of the Congress a Project poster was exhibited and a communication was performed by the University of Évora, which aimed to prove how germplasm banks (seeds) may be important tools for the restoration of Mediterranean Temporary Ponds.

The performance of this congress allowed and exchange of experiences and the creation of perspectives for the discussion about the integration of ecosystem services from wetlands in the social and economic development of the population and territory.
