"Temporary Ponds: a natural habitat to be protected!"

The LIFE Charcos International Seminar was held in 2017, in association with two other events (7th EPCN Workshop and 12th Annual Meeting of SWS-EC), between the 1st and 6th of May, at the University of Algarve, Campus Gambelas, Faro.

This event was organized by the League for the Protection of Nature (LPN in Portuguese), University of Évora and University of Algarve together with two other organizations, such as European Pond Conservation Network (EPCN) and the Society of Wetlands Scientists - European Chapter (SWS-EC).

The aim of this triple event was to foster a greater exchange of knowledge and experience among the various specialists in the area of wetland conservation in general and of temporary ponds in particular, especially among projects that are on the ground implementing habitat management actions for the conservation of these wetlands, also seeked to transfer knowledge to technicians, scientists and the general public.

EPCN held the 7th Workshop in conjunction with the LIFE Charcos Project Seminar, from 1st to 4th of May, with the theme: "Ponds in a Changing World", with emphasis on the following special sessions:

  • Special sessions:
      • Ecosystem functioning and services
      • Organisms, from populations to communities
      • Challenges in pond conservation and management 
      • LIFE projects
  • Workshop "Introduction to Visual Design for Scientists and Science Communicators"
  • EPCN General Assembly

There was also opportunity to visit some Mediterranean Temporary Ponds, recovered by LIFE Charcos Project, in Vila do Bispo and Sagres, on the 4th of May.

Meanwhile, the Society of European Wetland Scientists held the 12th Annual Meeting focusing on "Sustainable Management of Wetlands - Exploring New Approaches to Water Management, Biodiversity Conservation, Recovery, Pollution Control and Climate Change". This event took place shortly after the LIFE Charcos Project Seminar on the 5th and 6th of May, at the same location, and included:

  • Thematic sessions on:
      • Paludiculture as a sustainable use of wetlands
      • Ecological quality and conservation of wetlands
      • River conservation: facing agriculture intensification and climate
      • Wetlands and water quality 
  • SWS European Chapter meeting

There was also the opportunity to visit Vascão stream, under the project LIFE Saramugo.
